Self-control is defined as being in control of our thoughts and actions. It is achieved through practice and development of several Virtues. Temperance is needed in order to exercise conscious control of our behaviors, as we tend to run on autopilot. With temperance, it is possible to avoid losing control of our mental faculties - not letting our emotions get the better of us. We also develop control against our own desires when they may negatively impact our lives or our progress toward our goals. Discipline helps us develop positive habits to replace ones that inhibit us. Accepting Responsibility for our thoughts and actions and by practicing Reflection we can learn to avoid redirecting blame for our lives onto external sources (other people, circumstances, etc.). By practicing and developing all 12 Virtues, we are better able to curb negative mental obstacles such as doubt, fear, insecurity, etc. Self-control is a necessary component toward achieving self-mastery.
